  9.  AB    INTRODUCTION: The negative publicity about AIDS has resulted in a
  10.        non-conducive environment for people with HIV/AIDS and their families.
  11.        AIM: This paper aims at analysing factors that constitute to positive
  12.        community support of the HIV affected in Southern India. METHOD: The
  13.        case studies of the HIV affected people brought to light by the media
  14.        were analysed. These were followed by Individual Case Work. Counselling
  15.        and support services were mobilised. RESULTS: Lower social class and
  16.        caste were indicators of good community support and understanding.
  17.        People from rural communities were more supportive and accessible.
  18.        Mobilising resources for felt needs like shelter, job and needs of
  19.        survivors helps formation of self-help groups. CONCLUSION: Demystifying
  20.        AIDS, delinking HIV and death and instilling a positive approach is
  21.        essential for community support.
